Being the Artful Dodger for a couple weeks

There a jazz song by Jon Garbarek Group I came across the other day entitled “It’s OK to Phone the Island That Is a Mirage.” It’s a good song, but what I like most is the thought behind it; especially now that I am heading out on vacation for a few weeks.
What will I do with my time away? Get lost, disappear, be very, very hard to find. I will be on the run from the news. Just call me the Artful Dodger; because that is all you will know of me while I’m gone from my post for awhile.
It’s not that I don’t like any of you. In fact, I regard you all highly.  But I am really looking forward to the thought of my telephone ringing at an empty desk in an empty newsroom in the wee small hours with no one to answer it. Thus the song title: “It’s OK to Phone the Island That Is a Mirage.” Because that is all my office will be while I’m gone: A mirage. The voice mail will pick up making it seem like I might call back, but I won’t.
What will I do during my vacation? Let’s just say a few rivers run through it, and by my side for part of it shall be a pleasant companion. That’s all you really need to know. Oh, I might pop up here and there. I might be spotted like the fleeting vision of the Sasquatch in some high and lonely forest or an early morning vision of some mythical lake creature, where you rub your eyes, blink and he’s gone.
But it’s been about a year and a half since my last two week summer vacation, and I intend to enjoy as much of it as I can far and away.
