Thanksgiving about more than turkey

Celebrating Thanksgiving is like celebrating everything good about autumn all in one fowl (pardon the pun) swoop. There is turkey for the table with all the fixings. There is family to gather and renew the bonds of caring and sharing with. There is pumpkin pie and autumn leaves shining outside the window. And there is general feeling that all is well, and all will be well, in the world if we can bottle this spirit up for the rest of year.
Christmas is nice, but it’s too stressful with gifts to buy, home entertaining or travel plans to make. Halloween is a fun but, ultimately, a shallow occasion full of sugary confections. Easter is too fraught with religious undertones and solemnity to fully let loose and enjoy the occasion.
Thanksgiving, on the other hand, is simple in its message, and expects nothing except that all should gather and enjoy the abundance life has to offer, (with due gratitude, of course). It is neither religious nor secular. It is, at heart, communal.
We talk these days about building community or about building community spirit, and we see that in a wonderful variety of ways in our local communities. It is nice to have one holiday in a year where every single citizen can get behind its message and its intention.
In a year where our collective Id as a society seems to be so magnified (Donald Trump anyone?), it is nice to spend this Thanksgiving holiday together, and think about all the great things life has afforded us in this region. A fine harvest, (despite rains and storms), Blue Jays October baseball (had to sneak that one in), and interesting new possibilities economically and socially.
So enjoy your turkey and your stuffing, give thanks to whatever power you credit, and fully relish and enjoy the fabulous spirit of this beautiful time of year.
