1957: Red measles for Christmas

Bow Island
– Mr. and Mrs. Sun Chuen had several members of their family home for the holiday. Norman, who is attending university in Edmonton has been home for a week and Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Fong and Mr. and Mrs. John Fong and their families were also present.
– Around fifty members of the St. Andrews congregation gathered at the church Sunday evening for a social and to visit with the two local candidates for the ministry, Ormand Lavenne and Leroy Angle, and other young people who were home from various points on holidays. Stanley Calder of Edmonton was emcee for this fine program. A sing song was enjoyed as were numbers by soloists, Sue Faris and Heather Southerton; accordion numbers by Mrs. McMurray and Ormand Lavenne; readings by Mrs. Green and Mrs. Mack and a solo and stories by Bob Faris. Mrs. M. Caswell made the presentation of gifts to the two candidates to which they ably responded. The evening concluded with a lunch of pie and coffee.
– Many families of the community were confined to their home during Christmas because of Red Measles, several of the children have been sick with them.
– Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Dorscher spent a few days here visiting with Alvin’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Val Dorscher. On Sunday, the Dorschers held a family reunion dinner with all their family home.

– Mrs. Frank Zorn was the lucky winner of a set of silverware being drawn at the Co-op store in Bow Island.
– The sympathy of the community is extended to the Krokom family in their recent bereavement. Mr. John Krokom paid a visit to this district on Christmas day, visiting his sons Melvin and Jesse. He was 81 and died suddenly at his home in Bow Island on Sunday, December 29.
– William Annon won the portable radio in the draw at Robinson Store in Bow Island.
– Stanley Calder, holidaying at Bow Island was guest organist at the church service on Sunday.

– Mrs. Margaret Kultgen had the misfortune of slipping on the steps at home and broke her arm. She is convalescing at home and is teaching her husband Ernie the art of house keeping.
– The Rev. Wallace who just recently arrived from Dublin, Ireland, held his first service December 15 in the Anglican Church, and after the service a reception was held at the home of Mrs. Roy Wallman to welcome the new Minister. Rev. Wallace also had Christmas Communion on December 29.
– A new “forced air” furnace has been installed in the Legion Hall and members are looking ahead to plan for a new floor.
– Mr. and Mrs. Ted Lyons are the proud parents of a baby girl, Candice Irene, born December 27 in St. Michael’s Hospital.
