1958: Winnifred CPR station closes

– The C.P.R. station at Winnifred will be closed on June 25th. C.P.R. officials from Lethbridge were in Winnifred on Friday making arrangements for the closing of the station. All the equipment is being taken out of the station and Wm. Annon has been appointed caretaker. Box cars will be billed out through Bow Island. The present agent M.J. Bihari, will be going to Coaldale for several weeks.

– There is a front page picture and lengthy article titled “Memorial Service Held To Officially Unveil Cenotaph”. The address of Harold Willis, President of the Bow Island Branch of the Canadian Legion was printed in its entirety.

– Mrs. C. Litt of Burdett and Mr. C. Cravelle of Calgary recently travelled to Oklahoma where they attended the Graduation exercises of Keith Lynn who graduated as a Petroleum Engineer.

– On Thursday in Lethbridge a hearing into the Coverdale jewel robbery was held. Two suspects have been apprehended and are at present being held in the Lethbridge Jail. The two pleaded not guilty and a trial will be held next Wednesday. One of the suspects at one time had a shoe repair shop here. One of the suspects was picked up in Taber and the other in Lethbridge. About one third of the stolen jewelry has been recovered.
– Edwin Kiffiak is having trouble writing his grade IX exams as he has had to do it with his left hand and as any right handed person knows that is no easy task. Edwin had the misfortune to remove his thumb from his right hand by getting it caught in a power take off.
– The County offices are progressing in the building and boasts a circular council room. The other day a rate payer on seeing this circular tank, said “I wonder why the room is round. Could it be so no one councilor can corner another?”
– Tender – Tenders will be received by the undersigned until 5 pm, Friday, July 11, 1958 for the barn located on the Conquerville school grounds. Envelopes to be clearly marked “Tender on Conquerville barn”. The building must be removed and the site cleaned up within 30 days of acceptance of tender.
