Welcoming back a favourite pastime

So, I have finally picked up a book and did some reading just for the pleasure of it. I can’t remember the last time I was able to do that. I used to read constantly when I was growing up and can’t count the times I stuck a Nancy Drew book under my pillow before falling asleep. Sometimes, I had more than one book shoved under there.
Reading press releases, advisories, other newspapers, and doing research for the past decade-and-a-half (or more) has taken away my desire for reading a good novel. It isn’t that I never wanted to, I just haven’t had it in me. By the time I am finished with my ‘work’ reading, the last thing I have wanted to do was pick up a book and do some more of the same.
That is until I was at my parents’ house recently and noticed a paperback by one of my favourite authors, Greg Iles. Years ago, I had read his first two novels, Spandau Phoenix and Black Cross, both WWII novels that I enjoyed immensely.
So, when I saw another of his novels sitting on the book shelf, mom suggested I take it home and read it and I was happy to oblige.
I’m not quite halfway through the book now, taking a few minutes each night after I’m finished Facebooking and have the TV on just for the ‘noise’ to read a chapter or two before the light gets turned off and my eyes get closed.
I am rather enjoying these peaceful moments. I forgot how much I enjoyed a good story and it is such a good way of putting to rest all of the other information that had collected in my noggin that day. Sure, computer games do that too, but a good novel does it better.
Once I am finished reading this Iles’ novel, I will be on the search for the rest of his books and will likely snoop through mom’s book shelf again to see what else I can find.
After so long, I am happy to say I can once again read for pleasure. For the longest time, I thought that it was a pastime that would never again make a resurgence. Thanks to Greg Iles, one of my favourite pastimes has found its way back into my life and I think this time it’s here to stay.
