Support your local greenhouses

The production at greenhouses is an impressive feat but the unfortunate reality is it is a business and distribution goes to what they call the “middle man” and it is not right.
It is once the vegetables are grown that the “middle man” comes in and writes a cheque to the greenhouses for their produce and charges an arm and leg on the shelves.
It is a business at the end of the day but for Safeways and Co-ops to come in and take loads back to the store for consumers to spend a pile of money, devalues what a greenhouse’s purpose is.
Greenhouses should be proud of what they have accomplished but a lot of the time it is for the big grocers and there may be times they feel unappreciated for what their hard work.
Owners should be making it possible for shoppers to come to them and give them a sense of what food looks like right from the source.
The drive to a local greenhouse to see the product is a refreshing experience for not only myself but hopefully for other people as well because as consumers it is a nice change to walk into a small market to pick up produce and at a very inexpensive price.
It is up to greenhouse owners at the end of the day whether they want to keep product to sell within their facility, but there can never be enough vegetables sold outside a grocery store.
It is difficult to go into a grocery store and pay double the price but in today’s society we are encouraged to spend, spend, spend.
Educate yourself, shop local and not for the convenience.
