Anyone who missed Irvine School’s dinner theatre on January 27 missed a good time.
A succulent beef dinner was cooked and served by the school’s catering class. A comedy entitled, “Jitterbug Juliet” was performed by drama students and featured a dance troupe and a Shakespearean theatre group at odds with each other who, by curious means, learned to cooperate.
Products of the students’ art and craft skills were auctioned off as fund raisers. All the cooking, crafting, performing, decorating, and back-stage work were capably handled by students. Good show!
The Irvine Ladies Bonspiel took place Jan. 28-31, with 11 teams competing.
The A Event winner was the team of Tammy Foster, defeating that of Shirley Roy. In the B Event, Nellie Simpson won over Sheri Zieffle, and Suzette Parahoniak took C Event from Robbie Hodgson.
A catered banquet followed on Saturday evening, with prize giving and other activities. A fashion show was presented by P & V Clothing Company of Maple Creek.
The event’s theme was “Dr. Suess”, with many participants dressed to suit. The winner of the costume contest was the team composed of “Things 1, 2, 3, and 4”.
A loonie auction and several other draws produced more winners. The big basked went to Dawn Funk.
Irvine Minor Hockey’s Pee Wee team hosted a tournament on January 30 to February 1. The eight competing teams came from Irvine, Medicine Hat, Maple Creek, Gull Lake, Indus, Simon Valley, Rockyford, and Olds. The Irvine Bulldogs won A Side over the Olds Grizzlies. The Maple Creek Hawks won B Side over Indus.
Members and guests of the New Horizons Club enjoyed its season pancake supper on Feb. 10 and afterward, held the club’s annual meeting. Several new members have joined so perhaps some new forms of community gathering may result. As always, card and bingo players, the more the merrier, are welcome at the club.
