Bow Island RCMP acting detachment commander, Cst. Adam George presented local policing priorities to Bow Island town council on Feb. 14.
The first priority is road safety where local RCMP are working on traffic safety and enforcement issues within Bow Island, County of Forty Mile and Foremost.
Bow Island RCMP have been working collaboratively with Redcliff Traffic Services, Alberta and Community Peace Officers in joint force initiatives operations.
“In the third quarter of 2021, the Bow Island RCMP and Redcliff Integrated Traffic Unit issued a combined total of 143 violation tickets,” said George.
The detachment has one member trained in radar and speed detection.
George said this is in large part due to COVID-19 pandemic halting all RCMP training.
Police and Redcliff Traffic Services set up a traffic stop in Bow Island over Christmas.
“There were no impaired driving related sanctions as a result of the check stop and no tickets were issued during the operation,” said George.
Priority No. 2 is crime reduction with a focus on preventing and reducing property crime.
George reported that the amount of property crime offenders is low.
“The majority of prolific property offenders are now bound by release and conditions as result of criminal charges,” said George.
“Our members continue working diligently at managing those offenders and completing compliance checks to ensure they comply with release orders.”
Officers completed 370 proactive rural patrols in the County of Forty Mile.
Community engagement is the third priority and focus on building and maintaining relationships in the community.
Georges says while COVID has hindered their ability to engage within the community, that each member has taken on the role of School Liaison/Community Resource Officer.
“The members have not been able to enter the schools to engage with the student, but have been able to speak with them after school or during lunch while the kids are outside,” said George.
