Bow Island Council initiates train whistle assessments, pool lining repairs

August 14 marked the final meeting within the Hyland Room for the Town of Bow Island.

Council received a delegation from the local RCMP, detailing human resources, financial data and crime statistics for the Bow Island Detachment. It was noted that law enforcement is generally dealing with low recruitment numbers, and as such, human resources across the southeastern corner are somewhat stretched thin.

Regardless, the RCMP assures that they remain dedicated to being a presence in the community to increase safety and security.

A motion was passed to move forward with a Train Whistle Cessation Assessment following Crossing Safety Assessments of the 4th Street East and Centre Street railway crossing, for the potential of whistle cessation. A number of issues were mentioned, including the potential of too many crossings close together, as well as some trespassing that could make the whistle cessation dangerous.

Council moved to accept a quote for a swimming pool liner from RECA Vinyl Works. The pool, constructed in 1964, has been experiencing degradation, including cracking of the basin, and it was recommended that a pool liner be installed.

The project has a total budget of $332,000, to be paid by a Community Facility Enhancement Grant of $125,000 and the Canada Community Building Fund.
