With its impressive 12-meter drop, photogenic split flow, and icy winter charm, Lundbreck Falls is a must-see natural wonder you need to see for yourself.
Are you looking for a stunning waterfall that won't require a long hike to reach? Well, look no further than Lundbreck Falls, one of the most impressive waterfalls in southern Alberta! Whether you're road tripping along Highway 3 in the Crowsnest Pass region or on your way to Waterton Lakes National Park, Lundbreck Falls is a must-see destination that will leave you in awe.
Lundbreck Falls proudly stands as the largest waterfall on the Crowsnest River, cascading about 12 meters over a rocky ledge and into a breathtaking canyon. One of the reasons why this waterfall is so photogenic is due to its flow being split by a tiny island near the crest of the falls. As if that wasn't picturesque enough, the falls are backed by a charming train bridge, forested foothills, and distant mountains. Lundbreck Falls is situated near the hamlet of Lundbreck in southern Alberta, approximately 26 km northwest of Pincher Creek. Access the falls via Highway 3, then turn left onto Highway 3A.
The beauty of Lundbreck Falls is not limited to a specific season. In the winter, the falls transform into a partially frozen wonderland, with long icicles draping the canyon's edge. Come spring or after rainfall, the falls thunder with magnificent power, while autumn frames the cascades with hues of delicate red and yellow, creating picture-perfect opportunities.
Unlike some challenging hikes to reach waterfalls, Lundbreck Falls offers easy accessibility for all. Once you arrive at the Lundbreck Falls Provincial Recreation Area, you'll find two parking lots on either side of the falls. If the lot next to Highway 3A is full, just cross the bridge over the river and turn right onto Township Road 73A to access the south parking lot.
The falls can be admired from viewing decks at both parking areas, and there's no need for hiking to enjoy the mesmerizing views. However, if you want to explore further, a trail alongside the canyon leads to the other observation area, offering yet another unique perspective.
Are you a waterfall enthusiast who loves getting up close to the cascading water? Lundbreck Falls doesn't disappoint! The north parking lot provides the best view of the front of the falls and the upstream Crowsnest River. Stairs lead down to the river, allowing you to get closer to the base of the falls. Be cautious with small children, as the rocks near the plunge pool may be slippery from the mist.
If you can't get enough of Lundbreck Falls, why not extend your stay and camp in the Lundbreck Falls Provincial Recreation Area? The campground offers 17 unserviced RV sites, 29 powered RV sites, and 12 walk-in tent sites. Many sites are beautifully treed, providing a cozy ambience for your camping adventure.
Keep in mind that camping at Lundbreck Falls is only available from May 12 to September 30, weather permitting. As there's no drinking water or firewood available on-site, be sure to bring your supplies.
Lundbreck Falls is a natural gem in southern Alberta that captivates visitors with its awe-inspiring beauty. Its easy accessibility and multiple viewing points make it a perfect spot for a quick rest stop or a weekend getaway. Whether you visit in spring, summer, autumn, or winter, Lundbreck Falls promises a memorable experience for all nature enthusiasts. So, pack your bags, hit the road, and don't forget to add this extraordinary waterfall to your must-visit list!
