I.C.Y.M.I.: Some Of Alberta’s Best Perogies Can Be Found At This Hidden Gem In St. Albert

Posted on August 2, 2024 by Britanny Burr

Do you love Ukrainian food as much as we do? Of course you do! From perogies to sausages, cabbage rolls to borsch, what’s not to like? Alberta perogie lovers are seriously blessed as there is an endless array of Ukrainian restaurants and distributors around the province. In fact, Alberta is even home to a few amazing Ukrainian festivals that feature the best of the best in local music, dancing, tradition, and–of course–food.

While it’s impossible to name the definitive best perogies and Ukrainian food in the province, some obvious contenders have earned notoriety across Alberta for various reasons. Today, we want to throw the spotlight on Taste of Ukraine, a truly unforgettable Ukrainian eatery that can be found in St. Albert. Taste of Ukraine began its journey in Edmonton in 2004 before opening its new location and moving to St. Albert in 2011. Serving hungry Albertans for 18 years now, this place knows its way around a mouth-watering dish, and we want to give you the scoop.

Opening the restaurant was a family decision that centred around sharing rich Ukrainian heritage, which features food as a key component. They’re all about good food and plenty of it. Moreover, they pledge to bring you the most authentic, fresh, and tasty Ukrainian food possible. “Since childhood, we have known that at the heart of all entertaining was what ‘mama’ prepared in the kitchen. We have not one ‘mama’ in our kitchen at Taste of Ukraine but an entire team of proud surrogate ‘mamas,’” the restaurant explains, so you better believe that this food is as good as it gets. Family is at the heart of this business, and every family member holds a key role in its daily operations.

Now, let’s turn our attention over to the food! Taste of Ukraine offers dine-in, hot takeout, and frozen bulk options to enjoy their creations. If you decide to dine in, you’ll be welcomed into a cozy, traditional environment that will make you feel at home within seconds. You’ll find appetizers like mini perogies, borsch, salad, and more on the menu. For entrees, you can choose from Chicken Kyiv, Kovbasa and Kraut, Meatballs in Gravy, Yuri’s Cherry Ribs, and more. Naturally, the entrees each come with perogies and an additional side including cabbage rolls, potatoes in dill cream, cheese crepe rolls, and the list goes on.

As you can imagine, the dishes are huge and filling, so you better come hungry. There are tons of options for hot takeout if you don’t feel like dining in, and you can’t go wrong with a bulk order to pop in your freezer for the next time you need some perogies in a pinch (we’ve all been there).

You can also find Taste of Ukraine at the local farmers market, a welcome addition to an already lovely afternoon of shopping, browsing, and eating.

This place is known for its amazing fried pickles, Cherry Ribs, borsch, and–of course–the perogies.

If you’ve got a craving for Ukrainian food in Alberta, this is the place for you.
