You Can Eat In An Old Train Car From The ‘80 At This Unique Alberta Restaurant

Posted on September 9, 2024 by Britanny Burr

Tucked away on the outskirts of Calgary, off Highway 24 near Mossleigh, is a spot that not only captures the spirit of the Canadian Prairies but captures the essence of what life was like during the time of railway travel, all held at Aspen Crossing. It’s an entire experience that combines history, adventure, and good old-fashioned fun! Aspen Crossing has so much to offer, but one special draw is its charming Diefenbaker Train Car Restaurant, a dining experience you won’t soon forget. Here, you can enjoy a delicious meal in a vintage and authentic train car, where every detail, from the cozy booths to the classic decor, whisks you back in time to the golden age of rail travel.

Experiencing the dining car is like stepping into a piece of history. The train is an authentic 1887 Pullman Palace Car that first arrived in Alberta in 1913, rumoured to have once had mob ties and had been used for club meetings by infamous gangsters. It was then purchased and was used as Canada’s 13th Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker’s personal business car. Years later, the car was relocated to Edmonton to the iconic Sidetrack Cafe, where it hosted acts like Sarah McLachlan, k.d. Lang, and the Barenaked Ladies for over 26 years.

In 2006, Aspen Crossing purchased the car and brought it to Mossleigh, where it was lovingly restored to its former glory. You’ll feel the nostalgia as soon as you step inside, where the polished wood, vintage fixtures, and time-period decor create an atmosphere that’s cozy and intriguing.

Today, you can enjoy dining at this historic rail car and treating yourself to hearty, home-style dishes that feel just right for the setting, from mouthwatering steaks to the aptly named Diefen burger to breakfast classics like sweet French Toast, savoury Omelettes, and a traditional Benny.

During the holidays, the Polar Express Train takes the family on a journey to the North Pole, all inspired by the hit movie.

If you’re looking to extend your stay, the campground at Aspen Crossing is a fantastic choice. With spacious and well-maintained campsites, it’s an ideal spot to park your RV or pitch a tent under the big Alberta sky. The campground is fully serviced, with all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay, including a general store stocked with essentials and treats. Whether roasting marshmallows around the campfire, exploring the property’s trails, or simply soaking up the prairie landscape, it’s a place well worth putting on your list of musts.
