Cypress County Council met on July 15, for its regular meeting. Here are the key highlights.
Council held a public hearing to discuss a rezoning application submitted by Sam Gust. The proposal seeks to rezone a 1.2-hectare parcel from Agricultural District 1 (A1-IDP) to Country Residential District 1 (CR-1). The land, located along Range Road 60, is part of a larger 12.5-hectare agricultural property that includes a residence, a dog kennel business, and irrigated acres. The zoning would allow for the subdivision of the parcel, with the applicant required to coordinate irrigation acre reallocation with St. Mary River Irrigation District. The area is surrounded by agricultural and residential properties, with light industrial development located further south. Council deliberated on the proposal, considering its alignment with the Tri-Area Intermunicipal Development Plan and the Township Road 120 Area Structure Plan.
The hearing concluded with some discussion of the previous factors and classifications that had impacted the property over the years and later during the meeting, the rezoning application was carried.
Council reviewed a draft concept plan for the development of 160 acres of County-owned land in Dunmore, situated at the intersection of Highway 1 and Township Road 120. The plan envisions a flexible business park accommodating highway commercial, hamlet commercial, light industrial, and open spaces. This initiative follows Council’s earlier decision to rezone the land to Direct Control District. The concept plan aims to provide a framework for future development, balancing market demand with a comprehensive vision for the area. Council provided feedback to guide the next steps, including the creation of an Area Structure Plan. This was motioned and carried.
Administration presented a proposal for funding improvements to the recently acquired Box Springs Fire Station and Public Works buildings. The upgrades are intended to meet the operational needs of both departments. Council discussed the importance of these enhancements in ensuring the facilities are fully equipped to support emergency and public works operations.
Council considered a proposal to acquire ownership of a Polaris Ranger UTV from the Elkwater Firefighters Association. Originally purchased in 2019, the UTV has been used in backcountry rescues, improving firefighter safety and patient outcomes.
The Schuler Community Association requested $750 from Council to sponsor lunch for its upcoming Poker Rally and Car Show on July 26, 2025. Proceeds from the event will benefit AJ’s Loan Cupboard in Medicine Hat. Council was in favour, noting its history of supporting similar community events in other hamlets and discussed the positive impact of such sponsorships on local initiatives.
