Three children, two adults transported to hospital following highway collision

Three children were transported to hospital for precautionary reasons after they were in a two-vehicle collision, which involved multiple vehicles in the lead-up, on July 30 on Highway 837 near Silver Sage Road, south of Brooks.

Two adults in the lead vehicle of the collision were also transported to hospital by EMS.

Investigators believe that three vehicles were travelling southbound on the highway shortly after 1 p.m. when the lead vehicle slowed down to make a left-hand turn.

During this time, the third vehicle following behind the other two vehicles entered the oncoming lane in an attempt to pass the other vehicles and caused a collision.

The collision caused significant damage to two vehicles which ended up in the east ditch of the highway.

The driver of the passing vehicle was charged for failing to take reasonable steps to ensure it was safe to pass. This charge falls under the Use of Highway and Rules of the Roads Regulation.

Semi kills, injures 14 cows

In the early morning hours July 31 first responders in Brooks attend the scene of a collision between a semi-truck and livestock.

Police say approximately 14 cows were killed or injured at the intersection of Highway 544 and Range Road No. 103, near Iddesleight around 4 a.m.

Upon arrival, first responders found the semi truck in the ditch and further investigation revealed another semi truck also struck the herd of cows that were on the roadway.

“The first was unable to immediately stop and not at the scene,” reads a press release.

No drivers were injured in the collision. Emergency crews and the cattle owner remained on scene to clear the highway.

Police say the matter remains under investigation.

Brooks resident faces several charges

Jordan Potts, from Brooks, faces several theft and fraud related charges after RCMP in Taber and Vauxhall obtained an arrest warrant for Potts in relation to a stolen pickup truck from Vauxhall.

Potts was arrested on July 27 for possession of a stolen vehicle worth more than $5,000, additionally, four additional charges have been laid against Potts as a result of an unreleased investigation involving possession and use of a stolen debit card early in July.

Police say additional charges against Potts are also pending.

Potts was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear before court July 31.
