Cypress County Fire Services currently operates out of eight fire stations, covering more than 13,000 square kilometres, with a team of approximately 115 paid-on-call firefighters. Jason Linton, Emergency Services Co-ordinator, shares how the 2025 season has been so far.
“Cypress County Emergency Services once again supported northern Alberta this year, sending one fire engine and a crew of four firefighters for nearly two months to assist in wildland-urban interface operations,” says Linton. “Closer to home, our crews recently responded to a large and challenging wildland/urban interface fire on September 21 near Cavan Lake. This incident put their skills and teamwork to the test, and once again highlighted the dedication, professionalism, and resilience that define Cypress County firefighters. We are extremely proud of the work our members do to protect their communities.”
The department celebrated several milestones and community interactions this year, including:
• Implementation of the Alberta First Responder Radio System, improving radio clarity and reception throughout the county.
• Completion of a major renovation of Dunmore Fire Station #1.
• Purchase of the new Box Springs Fire Station #4 on Highway 1 & Range Road 64, improving response times on the west side of the county, and serving as a new home for Southeast Alberta Search and Rescue.
• Hosting FireSmart Day in Elkwater, in partnership with Alberta Wildfire and Alberta Parks.
• Continued the strong partnership with HALO Air Ambulance in rescue and wildfire operations.
• A successful pilot project using satellite wildfire early-warning technology.
• Growth of the Prairie Rose Public Schools South Alberta Fire Rescue Academy, which continues to see increased enrollment and popularity.
What is his top fire safety tip? Linton says, “Lithium-ion batteries can start a fire in the garbage or recycling bin. Dispose of them at a safe battery recycling location instead.”
He closes with a note of gratitude, “I want to take a moment to thank all of our Cypress County firefighters for their commitment and service. Whether responding to local emergencies, supporting other regions of Alberta, or engaging in prevention and community initiatives, your dedication makes a real difference to all you serve.”
