County of Forty Mile’s council met for its regular meeting on Wednesday, October 22 addressing a range of important topics impacting local residents and infrastructure. From council remuneration to critical infrastructure projects, the meeting highlighted the county’s commitment to transparency and progress.

Council approved updated remuneration rates for the term. Effective immediately, the reeve will receive $1,750 per month, the deputy reeve $1,250, and councillors $1,000. Additionally, the mileage reimbursement rate was increased to align with the current Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) rate, retroactive to the day of the decision.

In compliance with the Municipal Government Act (MGA), council members are required to complete orientation training. To accommodate scheduling challenges, council passed a motion to extend the deadline for the remaining training components by 90 days. This extension allows councillors to fulfill their obligations while balancing other responsibilities.

A significant infrastructure project was greenlit as council approved the Burdett sewer lining initiative. With aging sewer pipes in need of repair, the project aims to extend the system’s lifespan with minimal disruption to residents. The estimated cost of $156,010 (excluding GST) will be funded through the 2025 Operations Division budget or reserves if necessary.

Councillor Drake provided an update on the North Forty Mile Landfill, announcing Alberta Environment’s approval for a new cell. Construction is set to begin in the spring, with an estimated cost of $1.3 million. The North Forty Mile Regional Landfill Commission plans to borrow $1 million to fund the project. Tipping fees will increase to $80 per tonne to support the expansion. Despite delays caused by environmental approvals, the site has sufficient capacity to meet current needs until construction begins.

The County of Forty Mile continues to prioritize infrastructure improvements and effective governance. With these decisions, council aims to enhance the quality of life for residents while ensuring fiscal responsibility. For more information on council decisions and upcoming projects, residents are encouraged to contact the County office or the official website.
