The Medicine Hat Rock & Lapidary Club will be hosting the Alberta Federation of Rock Club’s (AFRC) May Daze 2026 event at the Seven Persons Community Hall this May long weekend. AFRC members will have access to exclusive events, but the public is invited to view displays and demonstrations, take part in the auctions, enjoy the tailgate, and shop the Saturday market. The fun starts on May 16 and admission is free.
“Anyone who loves rocks won’t want to miss this event,” says Karen-Anne Cherwonogrodzky, VP Medicine Hat Rock & Lapidary Club and May Daze 2026 Chairperson. “The public is encouraged to come out to the Seven Persons Community Hall on Saturday, May 16th from 1 to 4 p.m. to view the demonstrations on stained glass, wire-wrapping, carving, and 3D printing, as well as showcase displays and live auction items. There is also a huge silent auction with a wide variety of rock, lapidary, equipment, entertainment, and household items. Come back from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to get your fill of shopping for cool rocks, gems, jewelry, and more at the Tailgate Market.”
“It’s a great time to shop,” Cherwonogrodzky adds, referring to the market where all manner of stones and jewelry will be available for purchase. “Prices are very reasonable.”
Be sure to get your final bids in on the silent auction items as the auction will end on Saturday, 8 p.m. sharp.
While May Daze celebrates rock and lapidary clubs across Alberta, this year’s event celebrates not only being the host location, but also the many Bow Island businesses that are supporting, sponsoring, and donating to festivities.
You may be wondering, what is lapidary?
Lapidary is the art and craft of cutting, polishing, and engraving precious and semi-precious stones to create stunning jewelry, decorative items, or intricate designs. This ancient practice, dating back thousands of years, requires precision, skill, and a deep understanding of gemstones’ unique properties, such as hardness, clarity, and refractive index. Lapidaries, or gem cutters, use specialized tools and techniques to transform raw stones into works of art, enhancing their natural beauty and value. Whether shaping a brilliant gemstone for a ring or crafting an ornate cameo, lapidary work combines artistry and technical expertise, making it a fascinating and timeless craft.
You don’t have to have any experience or even knowledge of lapidary to enjoy the public parts of the event. From the displays to the market, you’ll find something to love – let alone the camaraderie of the community coming together for May Daze.
May Daze 2026 promises to be an unforgettable celebration of creativity, community, and the beauty of lapidary. Whether you’re a seasoned rock enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this event offers a chance to connect with others, support local businesses, and marvel at the artistry. Mark your calendars, bring your curiosity, and join this gem of an event!
