Strychnine inquiries update

Online Strychnine Producer Training is now available for the 2026 season. If you plan to purchase strychnine, this training is required.

Strychnine Stewardship Training – SARM | Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities

Users must complete mandatory training before they are allowed to use strychnine. It will focus on the safe handling and use of strychnine such as storage, timing, monitoring, and disposal to reduce risks to non-target species.

Additional key information:

A valid Producer Training Certificate is required for an Agricultural Producer to purchase strychnine.

Access to the Strychnine Stewardship Training for the 2026 season is available from now until August 1, 2026.

Producer Training takes around one hour to complete, and the certificate is valid for this season (expires: 2026-09-01).

Please ensure you select “producer” when registering.

The Pesticides Regulatory Directorate (formerly known as the Pest Management Regulatory Agency) approved the emergency use of two per cent liquid strychnine to control Richardson’s ground squirrels from now until November 1, 2027.

This may be used in the spring from March 1 to June 15 or in the summer from July 15 to September 1.

Product in Canada is expected to be available by late May to early June.

Strychnine cannot be sold or used in urban areas and may not be used on acreages.
