Linda Carter won bronze in darts July 9 at the Southern Alberta Summer Games, but the Cypress County senior will tell you being active is far more valuable than any of her medals.
Which is why, at the July 8 opening ceremonies in Bow Island, she never expected to hear her name called for the prestigious Max Gibb Award.
“I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I thought they were going to call on someone else. It is such an honour and it truly means so much to me.”
Carter, who battled osteoarthritis and multiple joint replacements but has consistently been a part of the Games for more than a decade, is a more than deserving winner of the Max Gibb, presented in honour of one of the event’s founders to celebrate those “who go above and beyond to help continue the success of these games.”
Linda says she “will not quit… it’s the people who think I can’t do it that motivate me.” She has always been a valued member of Cypress County’s team, and embodies the qualities of community spirit that the Max Gibb award is all about.

Cypress County Team featured athletes
Kyrsen Lafferty (pictured below) joined the Panthers club this year, but her love for track and field started long before. She has competed with Irvine School for four years and her favourite event is long jump. She loves challenging herself to go farther each time and beat her previous mark. Now in her third year at the Games, her favourite memories include meeting new competitors and becoming friends.
Ashlynn Lafferty (pictured above) also joined the Panthers this year, after starting track in Irvine last year. She loves seeing how high she can jump, and pushing herself to improve. One of her favourite memories is tying her sister in the 100 metre dash preliminaries last year.
Madison Penner (right) has been on the court since Grade 5, when her teacher Ms. Bongaards handed out forms for an after-school basketball club. She decided to give it a try and four years later is still hooked.
Madison’s favourite position to play is centre, and her standout moment so far has been winning the city championship on home court. This year was her first year competing in the Southern Alberta Summer Games.
