Cypress County will not approve golf carts for road use

Cypress County opted not to apply to take part in the current provincial golf cart pilot project, after being an item of discussion for several meetings.

The notice of motion was first put forward at the July 7 meeting by Councillor Garry Procter. It was found to be too recent to a previous motion and as such, was moved to the September 15 meeting.

This request was brought forward by the Desert Blume Homeowner’s Association as a way to better regulate the use of golf carts in the community, as it currently reports issues with privately owned golf carts being used, often by minors who lack driving experience.

While the pilot would allow for the creation of by-laws to allow the use of golf carts on select highways within participating municipalities, the aim by participating would be to require the carts to be roadworthy and provide a clear set of guidelines to better enforce usage.

Councillors expressed concern that this would be seen as advocating for the use of golf carts on public roads and lead to more enforcement issues, potentially in other communities. Ultimately, the motion to apply for the project did not carry.
