Cypress County workers have been hard at it planting trees and making improvements at the Cavan Lake campground.
The project started last year when irrigation was added between the stalls and some trees were planted at the campground that is owned by Alberta Environment, but maintained by the county.
Besides planting trees and caraganas, they have added 24 pull-through stalls, including 10 with power, bringing the total campsites to 78 stalls (44 with 30 amp power), said Cypress County assistant CAO, Doug Henderson.
Approximately half of the campsites are seasonal.
Cypress County has also limited vehicle access to the lake shore.
“Access to the lake shore had to be limited according to Alberta Environment. The lake shore needs to be preserved, so people fishing are going to have to walk with their tackle boxes,” said Henderson.
The irrigation reservoir is supplied with spring runoff out of the Cypress Hills, and stocked with rainbow trout, making it a great fishing hole for anglers. Boaters are reminded that maximum boat speed is 12 km/hour.
A grand opening will take place at Cavan Lake on Saturday, June 28 at 1:30 p.m.
Cavan Lake is located 18 kilometres east of Medicine Hat on the Trans Canada Highway, then 5.5 km south on Range Road 40.
