From Nov. 7 to the 11th, Eagle Butte’s cross-country team travelled to New York City to take part in a meaningful race. Every two years, the team embarks on a different trip. Some of the trips included Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Seven adults including Kelly- Ann Nixdorf, who is one of the coaches of the team along with the other coach, Darryl Smith, and 23 students travelled together to take part in a number of activities. Their itinerary had tons of walking averaging around 12km a day, which proved to be good exercise for the team. Among many of the sites to see in New York, the team got to go to the top of the Rockefeller Centre, attend The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Statue of Liberty, a game at the Madison Square Gardens, seeing a Broadway show, the 9/11 Memorial Fountains and many other stops around the city.

The trip every two years is chosen mostly based on a race that is taking place around the time the team is able to travel. The race they participated in this year was called The Run for the Warriors 5k Road Race.

“What makes it so special is that it’s a race dedicated to the men and women wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as their families, as well as families of the fallen,” said Nixdorf.

The team ran behind a triple amputee with both prosthetic legs and an arm, which Nixdorf said was pretty impactful for the team to see.

“It’s a very overwhelming experience, and New York City is just so culturally rich.”

The team also has a great finish with team member, Kieran Smart placing first in his category, Marvin Genno placing first in the senior men’s category and coach Darryl Smith placing fourth overall out of 1200 runners.
