Louise Lyons came to Bow Island last December, two months after her husband William came to begin his job as public works supervisor. In that time, she has taken the time to learn about the community and get involved with causes near and dear to her heart.
When she lived in Okotoks, she would visit with dementia patients in Calgary as a senior companion and has continued volunteering with similar work in Bow Island.
“Often, their kids are too busy or live far away and they need company, so I talk with them, read to them, or go for walks. The older you get, the more you understand how important these things are. The older people have wisdom and knowledge that we can learn from, ” said Lyons, who works part time at the E Free Church.
Even though she was born in Toronto, Lyons says she is a country girl at heart.
“We have always lived in small places and my grandparents were farmers, so as kids, we always went to the farm to pick fruit and weeds, go for tractor rides,” she said.
In addition to wanting to give back to the community, Lyons said part of the reason for running for council is to challenge herself to do something different.
“It’s good to do things that scare you. I would like to help out in the community and get involved,” she said.
When asked how she could contribute as a town councillor, Lyons said, ““Sometimes, you need somebody from the outside to see things a little differently.”
“There is a lot of listening and thinking, and a lot of responsibility involved with council work,” she said. “I am hard-working and I call myself a rescuer. What can we do to help? I like to figure out solutions and think outside the box.”
