If you know anything about us, you know we love to throw the spotlight on Albertan towns. From hidden, rural gems with a whole lot of charm to iconic destinations that draw crowds from around the world, the province is filled with incredible places to discover, and we would never dare keep any of them hidden away from you.

Today, we’re excited to share that one of Alberta’s towns has received global acclaim as one of the world’s top “detour destinations.” Canmore has officially made it to the big leagues! Expedia named this charming mountain town one of the world’s top places. If you’ve ever strolled down Canmore’s Main Street with a coffee in hand, taken in the stunning peaks, or biked along the incredible trails, you already know why this town deserves a spot on the list. What’s a detour destination, you might ask? Essentially, these destinations are ones that Expedia and their travellers have regarded as the perfect “side trips” to add to an existing trip and get the most out of your travels. So, if you’re headed to Banff, Calgary, or anywhere in the area, Canmore should be your obvious “side trip” destination. If you haven’t had the pleasure of visiting or if you’d like a little reminder, let us tell you why Canmore got the recognition.

Canmore might not be the first name that pops up in international travel guides, but according to Expedia, it absolutely should be. The travel giant recently released its list of must-visit destinations for 2025, and Canmore proudly stood alongside some of the most incredible places on the planet. It shares the honour with some remarkable destinations, proving it belongs on the world’s stage. This small but mighty Canadian town is among global heavyweights like Fukuoka, Japan; Krabi, Thailand; and Girona, Spain, and it’s a big deal. And honestly? It’s about time the world caught on to Canmore’s magic. Not to sound bitter, but Canmore has spent many years in Banff’s shadow.

Located within an hour’s drive of Calgary and minutes from Banff National Park, Canmore is the perfect mix of rugged adventure and small-town appeal. From the friendly local population to the jaw-dropping mountains surrounding the entire valley, this place is a must-visit for many reasons. While Banff and Lake Louise are more widely known, Canmore has steadily gained attention for its thriving arts and culture scene, incredible food, and unbeatable outdoor access.

Expedia highlighted Canmore’s natural beauty, adventure opportunities, and laid-back vibe as key reasons for its inclusion. If we had to sum it up, we’d say that they pretty much hit the nail on the head.

The beautiful terrain and opportunity for adventure are at the top of the pile when you ask folks what led them to visit or move to Canmore. From world-class hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking in the summer to skiing, skating, and even dog sledding in the winter, Canmore is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. The town is surrounded by provincial parks and stunning landscapes, offering countless adventures in every season. Of course, there are also major ski resorts nearby.

Now, if you’re more into the food and drinks than the sports and adventures, this town has got more than enough to offer you, too. Canmore is a haven for food lovers, offering everything from gourmet dining to local craft breweries. Whether you’re looking for fine dining, casual pub food, locally brewed or distilled drinks, or a coffee and a sweet treat, you’ll be able to find it all. There are countless incredible, locally-owned businesses all over town, so be sure to show your love and support during your next visit.

Canmore balances its allure with an energetic spirit. The downtown streets are lined with welcoming shops, and it’s clear why locals genuinely love where they live. The town’s lively art scene and year-round festivals create a sense of community that makes visitors feel right at home. The natural beauty of Canmore extends far beyond its mountain views.

For years, Canmore has been Alberta’s best-kept secret. It’s beloved by locals and those in the know but often overshadowed by its famous neighbour, Banff. This recognition from Expedia puts Canmore on the global map, allowing visitors the opportunity to experience its small-town authenticity. It’s a testament to the remarkable scenery, vibrant culture, and incredible community spirit.

If you’ve yet to experience all that Canmore has to offer, now is the perfect time to plan your trip.
