Dear Editor,
Your July 29 Commentator, heading “Pen pals for 60 years…and counting” was very interesting as I have had a pen pal since 1940 (that is 74 years) when my Grade 5 teacher came back from her Easter Holiday trip to the U.S where she met an American teacher and they decided their students should each choose a pen pal from the other school. My pen pal was 10-year old, Lois. I never met her as the ladies in your paper did, but we had a good friendship going. It was during the Second World War and I had a brother in the army and at that time the U.S. was not yet at war. We kept in touch through the years of jobs, marriage, children and retirement. Now it is just a Christmas letter. Amazing that my pen pal is also from Indiana. She grew up in the town of Freedom, Indiana and now lives with her husband in Spencer, Indiana. I shall send her a copy of your front page.
Although I live in Calgary, my late husband George Rose has a farm at Schuler, that is why I receive the 40 Mile County Commentator, which I enjoy very much. Especially the reports from your MLA, Down Memory Lane, the cartoon, Foremost on My Mind. Sometimes the obituary has a write up of someone George knew and I hadn’t heard of the death. A great little paper.
Sincerely,
Lillian Rose, Calgary
