During the Town of Redcliff Council Meeting on May 15, Council reviewed a letter sent by MP Glen Motz regarding the impact of the carbon tax that was sent to all municipal government councils within the Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner riding.

“We all are well aware that Canada is facing a cost-of-living crisis,” said MP Motz. “Many people are simply unable to afford life’s basic necessities.”

Despite this, MP Motz’s letter explained, the Federal Government increased the carbon tax on April 1 by 23 per cent.

“What is often forgotten is the impact the carbon tax is having on municipalities and the communities you serve,” said MP Motz’s letter. “I have heard from many of you that the carbon tax is forcing you to cut services or raise property taxes. This will only get worse if the carbon tax continues.”

In his letter, MP Motz encouraged individual councils to send a letter to the Prime Minister, calling on him to create a permanent carbon tax carve-out for municipal governments, and he attached a sample letter to use as a guide if they choose to write the Prime Minister with their concerns, also stating that he can be reached by either email or regular mail.

Any questions, MP Motz’s letter stated, can be directed to his office at 403-528-4698 or glen.motz.c1@parl.gc.ca.

A motion was made to accept MP Motz’s letter for information and was carried.
