Get Involved – Get on Board!

Posted on October 3, 2024 by Ryan Dahlman

–  Cypress County accepting board and commission applications from the public until Oct. 8

Every year, Cypress County invites citizens to join a variety of boards, committees, and commissions – and in 2024, that time is now! Applications are open until October 8, with appointments announced at the council meeting on October 16. Adults (age 18 and over) are encouraged to apply, as voices from a variety of age ranges, backgrounds, and experiences are the best way to ensure diversity and representation. Have your voice heard and be the voice of your community while also getting to see how local government works firsthand.

LesleyAnn Collins, Legislative Supervisor, explains the process, “Annually, council holds their organizational meeting in October. That is when the Reeve and Deputy Reeve are appointed. After that, council members and members of the public are appointed to boards. We are seeking applications from public to sit on a variety of board positions.”

No experience is needed to apply. Citizens need only be of age and have a passion to serve. Training (if required) along with mileage and a per diem for successful applicants is provided.

“Some of the boards provide training, and some positions are trained by the provincial government,” says Collins, underscoring again what a great opportunity this is to learn about how government works, see the roles and regulations the County must follow, and to be involved in a meaningful way. “Appointed members build skills,” she adds.

For college-aged applicants, those skills would look great on a resume. For retirees, this is a great way to  remain connected to the community while learning something new.

“We are always looking for public representation on boards; it is crucial for community members to have a direct voice,” Collins adds. “By joining, members of the public can help shape decisions. Boards and committees thrive with a diverse range from the public – from the ag community, from the business community, parents, etc. Everyone’s option matters.”

To apply, go to the County website (https://www.cypress.ab.ca). Click on the Get On Board story on the home page. A link will appear to provide more information and a copy of the application. The boards and commissions are as follows; see the site to learn their primary functions and how often they meet.

• Agricultural Services Board

• Municipal Planning Commission

• Subdivision and Development Appeal Board

• Assessment Review Board

• Municipal Library Board

• Weed Control Act Appeal Committee

• Agricultural Pest Act Appeal Committee

• VERGE

Collins says, “The application asks you to rank your preference if applying to more than one position. However, sometimes people are appointed to more than one board. Anyone with questions can reach out to me at the County or email me using the email noted on the application form.”

This is a great opportunity. Your voice matters and your voice counts. Download the application today and submit it before the October 8 deadline.
