Foremost Historical Society celebrate completion of cemetery project

On Thursday afternoon, September 26, the Foremost Historical Society (FHS) invited the community to a celebration of their completion of an ongoing Foremost Cemetery project. 

The celebration began at the cemetery with FHS’ Daphne Johnson opening with a brief history of the project and concluding with the revealing of the new sign to help guide visitors to the gravesites of the residents residing in the cemetery. 

Village Councillor Tyson Ormann was also in attendance and gave a few remarks on behalf of the Village of Foremost. At the conclusion of the brief cemetery ceremony all were invited back to the Foremost Historical building for refreshments.

The main focus of the project is to help visitors locate friends, family, and others in the cemetery. The Village of Foremost has kept records for over 100 years. The first names and dates were written in pencil on a wooden board. FHS decided to make the information available to the public. With research and local help the information was gathered and organized into a booklet with one copy being left at the cemetery site and available at the Village Office or by emailing FHS. A future plan is to have this information also available digitally from an official community website.

With the research being done the new cemetery sign was created and erected at the cemetery gate. The sign shows plot numbers going from north to south from the bottom of the sign to further away. Large row numbers pressed into the ground go east to west close to the fence and then about halfway down the cemetery. The names are listed in the booklet alphabetically and there is a row number and plot number given for each gravesite. You can find the name you are looking for and find the row number on the ground and then walk to the spot. The Field of Honour names are listed in the booklet separately.
