Burdett School had their Meet the Teacher Open House and Book Launch October 17.

Families had the opportunity to come to the school in the afternoon with their children and get a tour of the school, meet their teachers and enjoy some free hamburgers and hotdogs. For many families it was a chance to meet the new principal, Scott Raible, who was enjoying the opportunity to serve up hamburgers and hotdogs to students, parents, and staff alike. It was wonderful to see our school community come together and share a meal while strengthening relationships between families and educators.

In addition to Prairie Rose School Trustee Pattie Rooks, who is a big supporter of Burdett School, world renowned Canadian author Sigmund Brouwer was on hand to help launch Burdett School’s very own book.

Where I’m From! is a literary anthology, written by our current grades 1 through 9 students, and was a collaboration with Sigmund Brouwer. The work began with Sigmund last year with a visit that involved multiple group sessions in addition to a whole school presentation. Sigmund and his Story Ninjas program supported Burdett School through the writing and publication of our stories. Grade Two/Three teacher, Amber Pinchinhad her grades 2 and 3 students in creating mini-biographies of each author and those are included in the final piece as well.

The highlight for many was seeing our young authors join Sigmund at the “Author Autograph Table” to autograph copies of their book.

It is such a powerful experience to watch students open a book and proudly show off their first published literary work to students, families and teachers.

For those who wish to purchase a book, Where I’m From, can contact Burdett School and purchase a copy for $15.
