Cypress County Council met on April 1 to discuss several significant matters, including the proposed removal of a Municipal Reserve Designation in Suffield and a sponsorship request for a major local business event.

One of the key topics on the agenda was a hearing regarding the removal of the Municipal Reserve (MR) designation from a vacant county-owned parcel in the Hamlet of Suffield. This property, located at 152 Ronald Avenue (Plan 881 1312 Block 30 Lot 1MR), has been earmarked as the proposed site for a new water treatment plant.

The parcel is currently zoned under the Public Services District, a designation that allows for public facilities, recreation, and other institutional uses. While the removal of its MR status would not change this zoning, it would enable the development of critical municipal infrastructure. Administration presented a detailed analysis to the council, emphasizing the parcel’s strategic location with convenient access to Ronald Avenue, as well as its proximity to the new water supply line from Ralston and an existing gravity sewer system.

Out of nine potential sites evaluated, this parcel emerged as the most technically feasible option. Importantly, the proposal also accounts for future flexibility, allowing portions of the site to accommodate public mixed uses, such as open spaces or recreation, should they be needed later.

During the meeting, council noted the alignment of this decision with larger municipal and regional strategies.

The presentation during the hearing concluded smoothly without opposition or extensive discussion. Following the hearing, this item appeared on the meeting agenda with a request for decision, and the removal of the designation passed unanimously.

Council also deliberated on a sponsorship request from the Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce. The request seeks funding to support the upcoming Alberta Chambers of Commerce Annual General Meeting (AGM) and its 125th Anniversary Celebration, scheduled to take place May 29-31, 2025, in Medicine Hat. This high-profile event will gather business leaders, policymakers, and community representatives from across the province to discuss key economic issues and opportunities. Hosting the AGM and plenary session presents an excellent opportunity to showcase the Southeast Alberta region, promote local businesses, and foster connections with decision-makers, a fact which council readily acknowledges.

Discussion surrounded sponsoring at a higher level than requested, if possible. It was decided to sponsor the lunch at the event and discuss later which funds would provide an additional $1,500 for transportation sponsorship.

Meanwhile, in general news, Cypress County is seeking a finance assistant. Applications remain open until April 16. Visit the County’s website for full details.

The next  council meeting will be on April 15, and the County office will close on the 18th and 21st for the Easter long weekend.
