Highlights of the County of Forty Mile’s July 23 council meeting

The County of Forty Mile No. 8 held its regular council meeting on July 23. The meeting covered a wide range of topics, from community events and infrastructure upgrades to agricultural concerns and recreational developments. Below is a quick overview of some of the main points and decisions.

In exciting news for amateur sports fans, Foremost School will host the Alberta 1A Girls Provincial Basketball Tournament. To support this event, council approved a $1,500 sponsorship.

Council discussed the need to upgrade the outdated fuel and bulk water control system, which is no longer serviceable due to technological obsolescence. Additional information will be gathered and the matter will be revisited in a future meeting. This upgrade is critical to maintaining efficient operations for residents and businesses.

Council deliberated on declaring an agricultural disaster due to unusual spring conditions. However, no action will be taken at this time.

A ratepayer raised concerns about trees growing in the ditch along Range Road 104, between Township Roads 112 and 114. The County is collaborating with the St. Mary River Irrigation District (SMRID) to mulch the trees and ensure road safety.

To enhance the efficiency of the gravel crew, council approved the purchase of two Super-B gravel trailers. The funds for this purchase will come from the Public Works’ 2025 and 2026 operating budgets, ensuring the County’s infrastructure projects remain on track.

Six inspectors were appointed under the Weed Control Act and the Agricultural Pests Act, and a Soil Conservation Officer was appointed under the Soil Conservation Act.

Changes to the boat dock policy were proposed for 2025. However, staff recommended delaying implementation until the new year to align with the start of the park season. Also under recreation, designated pickleball court sites will undergo clean up this fall, once park activity decreases.

The Reeve and Deputy Reeve attended an agrifood reception hosted by Cypress County Economic Development. This event provided an excellent platform to discuss opportunities for growth in the agrifood sector.

The County of Forty Mile No. 8 continues to prioritize community development, infrastructure improvements, and recreational opportunities. Stay tuned for updates on these initiatives and more in future council meetings.
