Conservatives – Offering Solutions for Canadians

Posted on July 9, 2026 by Ryan Dahlman

As the Official Opposition, Conservatives remain committed to the responsibility of holding the Liberal government accountable, while also offering better solutions for Canadians. Repeatedly, we hear from constituents wanting meaningful progress on affordability, public safety, and economic opportunity. While the Liberal government controls the House of Commons legislative agenda, Conservatives are listening and using every tool available to fight for the meaningful results and real change Canadians have been asking for.

One of those tools is the use of Private Member’s Bills (PMBs), which is proposed legislation put forward by non-ministerial Members of Parliament. PMBs allow Conservatives to introduce practical legislative solutions that support Canadians. Since last year’s election, Conservatives have introduced 40 PMBs addressing issues including agriculture, public safety, health, finance, interprovincial trade, transportation, and more.

For example, two Conservative PMBs aim to strengthen protections for vulnerable Canadians regarding Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). Bill C-218 is intended to stop the scheduled expansion of MAiD to people suffering only from a mental illness, while Bill C-260 prohibits government employees in a position of authority from proposing MAiD to someone who is not asking for it. As Parliament adjourns for the summer, Canadians can be encouraged that the all-party committee tasked with determining the future of MAiD expansion has agreed with the Conservative position – that MAiD should not be extended to those whose only illness is a mental illness. Going forward, Conservatives will attempt to convince the government to accept that recommendation.

Another PMB, Bill C-273, strengthens the productivity and competitiveness of Canada’s agricultural sector by accelerating access to feeds, fertilizers, seeds, and pest control products already deemed safe by trusted international regulators. Bill C-224 supports Canadians’ access to affordable natural health products by removing the unnecessary red tape and regulatory burdens introduced by the Liberal government. Conservatives are also taking steps to make major purchases more affordable for Canadians through Bill C-285, which would eliminate the GST on the purchase of a used vehicle.

Through proposing solutions via PMBs, Conservatives have been successful in securing important progress for Canadians. By working across party lines, Conservative PMBs such as Bill C-225, “Bailey’s Law,” which strengthens Canada’s response to intimate partner violence, received royal assent this month. Bill C-230, which improves fiscal transparency by creating a public registry of forgiven corporate tax debts, has passed through third reading in the House of Commons, and is now being considered by the Senate.

In addition to PMBs, Conservatives also introduce Motions in the House of Commons, which detail specific actions the government needs to take to address the challenges facing Canadians.

This year alone, Conservatives have introduced motions calling on the Liberals to strengthen protections for private property rights, scrap the Liberal sovereign debt fund, review federal health benefits for failed asylum claimants, establish a Tariff-Free Auto Pact to protect and expand Canada’s auto industry, reject the proposed 10% increase to the CRTC’s streaming tax, and crack down on rising extortion by closing loopholes that allow non-citizens convicted of serious crimes to make refugee claims.

In response to rising fuel costs, Conservatives recently introduced a motion to remove all federal taxes on gas for 2026, including the excise tax, GST, industrial carbon tax, and Clean Fuel Standard, to cut prices at the pump by 25 cents per litre and save an average family $1,218 this year. In addition, we have used motions to present our Food Affordability Plan, which lowers grocery prices by cutting hidden Liberal food taxes and increasing competition.  We also introduced the Canadian Sovereignty Act, which unblocks our resources, rewards those who build, and protects Canadian innovation.

Conservatives have also announced new policy initiatives to strengthen families and make Canada’s parental leave system more flexible. Our three proposals include flexible parental leave, allowing parents to pause and resume their leave within an 18-month period; learning on leave, which lets parents pursue education or skills training without losing benefits; and a caregiving exemption to benefit claw backs, giving families greater flexibility while encouraging increased childcare availability.

Conservatives are listening to Canadians and are putting forward solutions. We will continue to use PMBs, motions, and new policy initiatives to deliver meaningful change. We want Canada and Canadians to succeed and remain committed to restoring the promise of this country, so that hard work is rewarded and government remains accountable to the people they are elected to serve.
