Community members will soon gather for a local tradition. The Burdett School Annual Supper and Auction, taking place since 1990, returns on March 27 for an evening of food and fun, all for a great cause.
The event takes place at the Burdett Community Hall, located at 310 Main Street. Doors open at 5 p.m. Parents have worked hard to put together a menu to kick off the fundraising. Guests will enjoy a meal of Tacos El Pastor (pork tacos) served with chips, salsa, dessert, and coffee or juice. After supper, the auction begins.
Plans are well underway with many exciting items already in place for auction.
“We’re still collecting items from different groups that would like to donate to the school,” says Principal Scott Raible. “We’ve got all sorts of different items up for auction. We’ve got a giant teddy bear, different baskets that the students have put together, and donations from different businesses and companies. We’ve got some golf passes, too.”
One of the most unique items up for grabs is a flight experience.
“The flight academy at Eagle Butte has put up a certificate so you can get out and fly from anywhere around here for a couple hundred kilometers in any direction,” Raible explains. “That was quite a popular item last year!”
The funds raised directly shape the educational experience for Burdett School students.
“All the money helps enhance our instruction for our students,” explains Raible. “It helps fund, in part or whole, different equipment for volleyball, basketball, and badminton tournaments.”
He goes on to note that past auctions have helped fund theatrical and Indigenous presentations, flexible seating, standing desks, field trips, extracurricular programs, and STEM projects, too.
Last year’s event was a huge success. It was Raible’s first time helping with the organization of the supper and auction, and he couldn’t be happier to be part of this tradition that has now entered its 36th year.
