The Bow Island Minor Hockey Association is hoping the stands will be packed this weekend as the Bow Island Rebels Atom hockey team will be host to the 2015Atom C provincial championship this weekend at the Western Financial Group Community Arena.
The Bow Island Minor Hockey Association applied to Hockey Alberta to host the championship tournament and The Rebels recently beat out Okotoks for the Zone 5 title and because the local team is hosting the tournament, the Okotoks Oilers is still able to compete.
“We ended up beating Okotoks, so we are doubly qualified to be in the tournament,” said Kristin Ell, media director.
To host the tournament, the Bow Island Minor Hockey Association had to apply to Hockey Alberta last year.
“Hockey Alberta asked for submissions early and our team told the association that we would like to host the tournament,” said Jocelyn Nelson. “Zone 5 has not hosted it for a number of years and the fact we have such great community support here, I think are the reasons we were selected.”
“We have a lot of volunteers helping out; from work crews at the arena to volunteers putting on the team supper on Friday night, she added.
The opening ceremony will take place at 6:30 pm on Friday evening.
Local fans will have lots of opportunities to come out and cheer on the home team as round robin action starts on Thursday evening, with the Rebels taking on Carstairs at 7:45 p.m. The local team then plays Marwayne on Friday at 12:30 pm and takes on Winfield at 1:30 pm on Saturday.
The top two teams in each pool qualify for the semi-finals that take place on Sunday.
