MHPS – Following a joint investigation into the police pursuit which occurred on May 7, 2015, involving both the Redcliff RCMP and the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS), charges have been laid against the 54-year old male driver, Kevin Labelle.
The pursuit was initiated by MHPS members as the suspect vehicle fled the scene of a traffic stop on 13 Avenue SE and ended near Bow Island on Highway 3 when RCMP members were able to stop the vehicle. Kevin Labelle, of no fixed address, has been charged with 16 Criminal Code offences including: Assault Police Officer Causing Bodily Harm, Assault with a Weapon, Flight from Police Causing Bodily Harm, Dangerous Driving and Possession of Stolen Property. The Ford F350 Labelle was driving has been confirmed as a stolen vehicle from Winnipeg MB.
A MHPS member was injured when Labelle backed the stolen truck into the MHPS patrol cars that had stopped him at the bottom of Dunmore Hill in Medicine Hat. The MHPS officer has nine years of experience and is deployed as a member of the K9 Unit. The officer is expected to be released from the hospital in the coming days. MHPS PSD Larry, who was in the vehicle at the time of the incident, was examined by a vet and was found to be uninjured.
Labelle is currently in custody and scheduled to appear in court on May 12, 2015 at 9:00 a.m.
