The Cypress County Fire Department had April 21, responding to five calls, including four fires and a truck that was blown over by the wind.
County fire chief Kelly Meyer says the calls began with a car fire, the cause of which is currently unknown, at 4 a.m. on the Saturday.
In the afternoon, a semi truck rolled over due to the high winds.
“CFB Suffield responded to that one on behalf of Cypress County,” Meyer said.
“The driver, no injuries, got out of the vehicle. The wind just blew the truck over.”
Later, two powerlines were knocked down, causing fires in Ralston and Elkwater.
Finally, the department put out a grassfire in Seven Persons.
Meyer attributed Saturday’s fires to ferocious winds.
A fire ban is currently in effect throughout the county.
“Be very cautious,” said Meyer. “We have heavy fuel load from last year. The wind’s been unpredictable.”
