The Prairie Gleaners Society is celebrating 10 years in the community and it is inviting people to its headquarters for an open house at the beginning of June.
“We do this every year around this time and we want to invite anybody to come out and see us and what we do,” said board member Louisa Smith. “A lot of people may have heard of us and may not know exactly what we’re about, so this is a chance for them to come out and get a tour.
“We hope people come out and get a little more familiar with who we are and what we do.”
The open house is running from 10 a.m. to noon on June 1 and it is located at 11502 Range Road 63, Cypress County. Smith says it is a great chance for potential volunteers to see what they’re getting into.
“A lot of our regular volunteers will be there to welcome people and our board members will be there as well,” she said. “It’s going to be a fun day where we show people around and where we do what we do.”
The organization has helped send millions of meals around the world over the last 10 years by making use of unwanted produce. The group peels, cuts, dries and bags the produce before shipping it out across the world to place that need help.
“We’re going to be walking people through the plant and each work station will be set up during the day so people can see exactly what would be needed of them,” said Smith. “This is a good opportunity for anyone – no matter what physical limitations someone has, we’re always able to find work for them.”
