The Bow Island/Burdett Chamber of Commerce held its annual AGM on Feb. 4 and it was decided that April’s Trade Show has been cancelled for a second consecutive year.
“We just started too late again,” said Erna Varekamp, trade show coordinator.
“The decisions (for) the vendors should have been out already like September, October and we didn’t know. We are all new at this event as well. It was myself, Darci (Chamber vice-president Nixdorf) and Delaine (Chamber secretary Engebregtson) that we tried to get this all going.”
Verakamp says when they began the process for the trade show in January, the group knew they were pushing it for time.
“I couldn’t go to the meeting because I had to work,” she said.
“It was decided that we were going to put it off another year just because we want to make it a good success and not a slop either.”
There is a lot of work that goes into a Trade Show, she added.
“I think little things were all organized and all set up and ready to go but it was just too late, said Verakamp.
She found some challenges in organizing the event included how to get more people out to the Trade Show and what can the committee do to attract more people and also how to get more vendors coming out with booths being down in the last couple of years.
“Everything that has been planned for now will continue on and hopefully we can have a good and early start,” she said .
“We have learned our lesson. Now we know we’ll get a good early start and hopefully in September hopefully all the papers to the vendors and what not will be going out .”
Her hope is the Trade Show committee members will expand in planning the event and if anyone is interested, they can contact Verakamp at (403) 977-0496 or attend a meeting which happens on the first Tuesday of every month at noon at the town office.
