The Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 6’s (Redcliff) Ladies’ Auxiliary is struggling for members, says president Merle Davies.
“We’re down drastically this year,” said Davies.
“Last year we struggled and we did get an executive. We did get an executive again in December. Membership is older and of course they don’t get around as much as the younger ones, it’s the same. We can’t seem to get them interested. But I think a lot of the younger ones do things with their children now.”
The group supports the aims and objects of the Legion and is an integral part of their respective branches.
Membership went from 115 in recent years to under 50 in 2020.
“We had our election in December and we had the installation of officers,” said Davies.
“Of course I wasn’t there because I was away. I had a girl who stepped up to be first vice president. She’s had some illness and had to resign. We were without a vice president and my friend stepped up and became first vice president. She said “I’ve had that position before Merle, it’s OK.’ So while I was sick she came and told me that. I was glad somebody did.”
Davies says most of their funds goes toward the branch but still go out in the community towards HALO and their head office and sports funding.
“We cater to funerals, that brings us some money in, but our main money maker in the legion is our casino,” said Davies.
The casino is once every 18 months with the next one being in June.
