On June 6, Hiebert Cabinets went up in flames, driving a fast response from all the members of the Bow Island Fire Department. It took approximately 18 hours to put out the flames and clean up the site. This fast and efficient level of response is what this department is known for. It was one of the major incidents that Fire Chief Blaine O’Donnell recounts for 2024 so far.
During Fire Prevention Week, Chief O’Donnell is happy to support the theme, “smoke detectors save lives.” Well-maintained smoke alarms provide early warnings, allowing residents to evacuate safely. Alberta law mandates smoke alarms in all dwelling units, including rental properties and hotels. Proper installation and regular maintenance, such as testing alarms monthly and replacing batteries annually, are essential for their effectiveness.
When not putting out fires, you will find the Bow Island Fire Department active in the community.
Chief O’Donnell shares, “The Bow Island Fire Department always puts on a community haunted house. We will be doing it again this year on October 31st. Watch for more details to come sooner to the event. As well as some events we have already participated in, we participate each year in Market in the Park with Halo, the Beef & BBQ Raffle, and the Harvest Festival Pancake Breakfast.”
There is a full complement of staff, but those looking to apply can have their applications held on file.
“There is a link on the Town of Bow Island website (https://www.bowisland.com/community-services) on how to apply, or stop into the Town of Bow Island office to receive a paper application,” says the fire chief.
Busy, active, community minded, and ready to serve – thank the members of your local fire department when you see them in the community.
