Students at Bow Island Elementary School received a lesson in fitness, focus, and perseverance on Monday, Oct. 5, when former professional boxer Joel Mills returned to the school for a third straight year.
Mills, a Taber athlete who boxed professionally from 2006 to 2017, spent the day working with kindergarten to Grade 3 students during physical education classes. Since retiring from the ring, he has become a familiar presence in schools across the region, sharing his passion for fitness and the life lessons that come with it.
Non-contact, high-energy
The sessions were entirely non-contact and built around fun, energetic activities designed for young learners. Students rotated through a series of stations that included skipping, step-ups, fitness challenges, and punching foam focus mitts held by Mills himself.
Each station targeted a different skill. Skipping built rhythm and coordination. Step-ups and fitness challenges tested endurance and perseverance. The focus mitts gave students a chance to channel their energy with control and precision, under the guidance of someone who spent more than a decade competing at the professional level.
Teamwork was also part of the mix, as students cheered each other on and moved through the circuit together.
Lessons beyond the ring
While the activities kept students moving, the larger goal was character building. Mills uses boxing and fitness as a way to teach commitment, discipline, effort, respect, sportsmanship, and self-control.
Above all, he encourages young people to find the courage to challenge themselves. The message is simple but lasting: being challenged is an important part of growing and succeeding, both in sport and in life.
A role model for local youth
Mills has built a reputation as a strong supporter of young people in southern Alberta. His willingness to return year after year reflects a lasting commitment to the community and to the students who look up to him.
Staff at Bow Island Elementary expressed deep gratitude for the time, energy, and experience Mills continues to share. The school considers itself fortunate to have community members who invest in local children and help shape their confidence and character.
For the students at Bow Island Elementary, Mills’ visit offered more than a workout. It offered a model of what dedication, respect, and courage look like in action, and a reminder that the people who invest in youth help build stronger communities for everyone.
By all accounts, the students loved every minute of it.
