The Redcliff Legion celebrated its 100th anniversary the weekend of Oct. 17-18, complete with opening a time capsule that had been safely hidden in the cenotaph since 1986.
Those who attended were able to see a wide variety of displays of different photos, uniforms and even a few weapons as the legion was turned into a museum over the course of Saturday and Sunday. Attendees enjoyed refreshments as well as a moment to connect with pieces of local history.
On Sunday, veterans, legion members and South Alberta Pipes and Drums marched over to Memorial Park for a short service, as well as to retrieve the small time capsule which had been placed inside the cenotaph four decades earlier.
Contents included a pin, photographs and other small mementos, as well as multiple pages of a roughly 40-year-old copy of the Medicine Hat News. The treasures were preserved in plastic, and returned to the cenotaph alongside a new time capsule on Oct. 19.
