Town of Bow Island crews are closing out the outdoor season and shifting focus to winter operations and infrastructure work. Council received the Manager’s Report covering Sept.16 to Oct. 19 at its Oct. 19 Committee of the Whole meeting.
Parks, Recreation & Facilities
All irrigation systems have been blown out, and the splash park and pool have been winterized. Only the pool’s climbing wall, slides, and diving board remain to be removed.
The arena is in full swing for the season. Alberta Health Services was scheduled to inspect the arena concession on Oct. 19.
Staff training continues. Dom will attend the Arena Level 2 course next week. Dom and Colby have also earned their Class 3 driver’s licences, which adds flexibility to the Town’s operations.
Crews will be out sweeping and vacuuming leaves around town in the coming weeks.
Unfortunately, the library furnace has stopped working three times in the past few months. Council was made aware of the ongoing issue.
Water & Sewer
Work on the First Avenue waterline took place. Crews have also repaired water leaks on South Railway and on 4th Avenue in front of the FCSS building.
Services for 601 6th Avenue are set to be installed. Work on the Sunset infrastructure project will begin once those services are complete.
Lagoon testing continues to show strong results. Total suspended solids (TSS) have held steady below 10, well under the maximum allowable level of 25. The lagoon release began Oct. 19.
General Updates
Bow Island’s Director of Emergency Management has received Incident Commander certification. Three additional staff members will take ICS 400 training in November, further strengthening the Town’s emergency response capacity.
Looking ahead, the 2027 paving projects have been sent out for quotation.
A Strong Team Keeping Things Going and Around Town
A seasonal head cold made the rounds among the team, but that didn’t slow the Committee down! From winterized facilities and repaired water lines to new certifications and upcoming paving plans, Town staff are keeping things moving — and the community is better for it.
