Horn Scoring Day for Medicine Hat Fish and Game

January 27 saw hunters from Medicine Hat and beyond gathered in the Seven Persons Community Hall, to show off their best catches of the year.

While the event has been historically held in the Cypress Center, the Medicine Hat Fish and Game Association chose to hold it in the Hall, and president Glenn Heather notes he was still very pleased with the turnout for the annual event.

“It’s a local club. So usually local people bring their animals that they’ve harvested throughout the year, prior years, we have a large head of display area where we kind of celebrate the animals,” said Heather. 

The display demonstrates how the sport goes behind just harvesting animals, said Glenn, highlighting the respect and awe hunters have for the creatures they collect.

“They’re beautiful animals,” said Heather. “So because they are such beautiful animals, we put them up on display for other people to look at them, and see the diversity of what’s out there in our area.”

Part of the draw of the event is of course the horn scoring, bringing in the horns or antlers of an animal to have them professionally measured, which can generally be used to determine the general size of the animal itself, even without the rest of the body.

The event also showcases some of the projects that the organization has been working on, such as their Feed A Pheasant campaign, and various other projects designed to help improve the habitats of the animals they love, as well as increase hunter accountability and safe practice to help create a better relationship between hunters and landowners. 

The event also featured various fundraisers for the organization, and some craft vendors showing off some of their related wares for the event goers, and overall was a success, featuring a truly impressive display of heads and antlers.
