Senator Gershaw School opened its doors to the community on April 9 for its annual Exhibition of Learning, and the event was nothing short of inspiring. Parents, grandparents, and community members filled the school hallways, classrooms, and grounds to witness the remarkable achievements of students from Grades 4 through 12.
From hands-on projects to live demonstrations, every corner of the school was buzzing with excitement. The evening was a true showcase of student creativity, innovation, and hard work across a wide range of disciplines.
A major highlight of the night was the culmination of the school-wide Spelling Bee, featuring students from Grades 4 to 9. After a fierce competition, congratulations went to Grade 7 student Bobby Hillyer, who emerged as the spelling champion.
Each grade and subject had something unique to share:
• Grade 4 students created their own board games, combining strategy, storytelling, and education.
• Grade 5 students wowed attendees with a STEM fair full of exciting science experiments.
• Grade 6 students presented imaginative alien lifeforms and space-themed models.
• The high school Biology class amazed (and slightly grossed out!) guests with a live eyeball dissection demonstration.
• In Home Economics, the smell of freshly baked cookies greeted visitors, while sewing projects lined the display tables.
• Shop students showed off intricate woodworking projects and impressive welding skills.
• The school greenhouse was open for tours, where guests learned about the thriving cucumber production efforts led by student agricultural teams.
• Art projects from all grades adorned the hallways, showcasing both traditional and digital mediums.
• Guests could even step up on stage to explore the detailed set from the Grade 11 Drama class’s most recent theatrical production.
Technology and innovation were also on full display. Junior High students impressed with their videography skills, 3D printing projects, and laser engraving displays. In the sciences, Physics 30 students demonstrated a live 2D collision experiment, and high school math students presented a real-world-based Grain Bin project.
The evening concluded with an unforgettable and powerful simulation: a mock disaster response scenario involving a staged accident. With emergency services dispatched, students from the South Alberta Fire Rescue Academy demonstrated the extraction techniques and emergency protocols they’ve mastered over the past two years. We are deeply grateful to the Bow Island Fire Department and Ambulance Services for their guidance and participation in making the experience authentic and safe.
The night was capped off by a dramatic and moving moment—HALO Air Ambulance touched down in the center of the school’s running track, completing the simulation with a helicopter evacuation of the “victim.” It was a striking reminder of the power of community collaboration and the importance of emergency preparedness.
Senator Gershaw School extends its heartfelt thanks to all staff, teachers, students, and community members whose dedication and enthusiasm made the Exhibition of Learning a resounding success. It was a true celebration of education, talent, and community spirit.
