September 7, 1892 – The

The Grand Medical Council of England has issued an order compelling medical students to five years of study, hospital attendance and lectures, before being qualified to appear for the final examination. 

More than 24 million francs have been expended on the construction of the Church of the Sacred Heart in Paris. It is estimated another five million francs will be needed before it is complete. 

The weather has at last settled down to business, and none too soon for the good of the harvest. A large number of our farmers are about through with their cutting and the binders are being pushed for all they are worth. This week will see the harvest all but complete and it will be the best we have seen in this country. 

September 10, 1909 – The

Do not worry about the finances of Mrs. C. Thaw, wealthy mother of Harry Kendall Thaw who stood trial for the 1906 murder of famed architect Standford White. She owns one thousand shares of Standard Oil stock that are worth $700 a piece and yield a dividend of 40%. Her lawyers are well aware of this. 

A school bulletin issued lately by the US Bureau of Education outlines how schools in foreign countries have progressed and are feeding all children. In Germany, private charitable organizations raise money that is supplemented by municipal funds and almost all children are fed in the larger cities. In Copenhagen meals are provided free to all children who want them. In Zurich, school authorities are responsible for providing free meals to all children from lower income households and other families pay three cents per meal. 

It is only sixty years since the khaki uniform was first introduced to the British army. It was not until the South African war that khaki became a familiar word to the majority of Englishmen.

Perhaps the oldest design used in modern automobiles is the universal joint, which, in principle, is identical to that first designed by Jerome Carden in 1520. While the original employs the exact same ideas, the present type is sure to be different in detail and structure when it was modified to automobile use. 

Bootleggers, and others who assume the risk by their connection with the illicit liquor business, received a timely warning from the magistrate in the police court yesterday. In remanding Isaac Greenwood for sentencing, who had sold two bottles of whiskey while out of work, his worship stated he’s been instructed to enforce the law and in future the fine for selling liquor will be $1,000. 

The Hudson Bay Co. has announced they are closing their grocery departments in all stores as soon as stock has sold. The other departments in the general store will operate as usual during the fall and winter months.
