Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta

At 92 years old, author, historian and former MLA David Carter continues to demonstrate that service, learning, and sharing knowledge have no retirement age.

Carter has been named one of Southeast Alberta’s 2026 Top 7 Over 70™ recipients, recognizing the contributions he continues to make well beyond the age of 70.

An accomplished author and historian, David Carter has written more than five books and continued writing extensively after turning 70. His work has covered topics ranging from history and politics within the Legislature to therapeutic and spiritual writings intended to help others. One of his therapeutic books has been used in nursing homes and with people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

His commitment to public service spans decades. Carter served as an MLA for 17 years and Speaker of the House for more than seven years. His experience later led him to mentor other Speakers, allowing him to continue sharing the knowledge gained over his years in elected office.

Now 92, he remains an active member of his community and continues to pursue his passion for historical writing and sharing his knowledge with others.

David Carter joins six other recipients from across Southeast Alberta: Gail Anderson, Gordon Reynolds, Les Little, Uwe Karsten Krickhahn, Ron Edwards and Terry Cooper.
