UPDATED: Tragedy strikes Bow Island

Bow Island RCMP were dispatched to a call northwest of the town at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
“Police determined a 47-year-old male from Bow Island was operating a payloader when there was mechanical kind of issues,” said detachment commander Neil Bailey.
“It took a sharp turn and struck two youths, an 11-year-old male and a 17-year-old male. The 11-year-old male was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The 17-year-old had no injuries.”
“The Bow Island RCMP, the Occupational Health and Safety, along with chief medical examiner continue to investigate.”
The deceased was determined to be a Grade 6 Bow Island student.
The Town of Bow Island’s Facebook post said that “these sudden and unexpected tragedies can greatly impact a community and our young people as they mourn the loss of a friend.”
Prairie Rose School Division, in conjunction with the Town of Bow Island, has set-up family counseling supports today from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the community room in the town office. A family support worker will be on hand to assist those in need of it. Additional days will be added if required.
A statement from Mayor Gordon Reynolds, council and staff says
“The Town of Bow Island is in shock and grief today at the loss of a young member of our community. We offer our condolences and prayers to the Porteous and Laidlaw families.”
