The Bow Island Recreation Advisory board has been working for the past year on developing a strategic plan that will assist them and the Town in long-term planning for the community’s recreational facilities and in developing future programs and initiatives.
“We hadn’t been working with any sort of plan and we did this at the request of the town,” said Bernie Lyczewski, who has been on the rec. board for more than 15 years and presented the strategic plan to council last month.
It was last April that recreation advisory board members started holding in-depth discussions for a three-year plan and further long-term planning.
“We needed to address what things are we going to need to focus on with the multiplex, the pool, and the arena. We’ve looked at some of this in the past, but it would get talked about, then it would go into a black hole and not looked at again,” he said. “We looked at improvements at the different facilities, but also how to get more people involved, and we want to make sure the facilities are properly looked after. Our main focus is to get us all going in the same direction.”
They have also decided to form a society so they can have access to more opportunities for funding.
“This way we can get in on doing casinos and that is a cumbersome process, but we are started on it,” said Lyczewski.
The Bow Island Recreation Advisory board is also doing a survey that will be distributed in the community to find out what is wanted and needed with the residents. Lyczewski said the survey should be available in the coming weeks.
