Over 40 members from the five 4-H clubs in the Cactus Country 4-H District will still make their June Market Steer Sale possible with safety measures and a virtual option in place.
“These members have been feeding and working with their animals since November and they will be finished and ready to sell on June 12 and hit local deep freezes by the end of July,” said Shirley Elliott, the district’s spokesperson.
“This year we are unable to have the show part of our annual Achievement Day, but are continuing with the sale to keep things as ‘normal’ as possible for these hard working members.”
The sale will take place on June 12, starting at 1 p.m. at the Medicine Hat Feeding Company.
Only the MHFC staff and specified order buyers will be the only attendees allowed.
“Please watch the sale live on Facebook if you are interested,” said Elliot.
“You can find the live feed on the Medicine Hat and District 4-H Beef page.”
The process for the buyer and bidder will include seeing steers being sold by the pound and buyers can contact one of the order buyers with their bid, which member’s animal you’re interested in bidding on and contact information.
“They will let you know the weight of the animal on sale day and handle all the bidding for you,” said Elliott.
“You make payment for the animal to the Medicine Hat Feeding Company who then pays the 4-H member.”
After the purchase is made, the 4-H member will take it home and has an appointment already booked with the local abattoir. The steer will be delivered on a specified day, while the buyer will contact the abattoir with cutting instructions.
The abattoir will contact the buyer once the meat is ready and payment for processing will be made upon pick up.
